Democratizing The Editing Process

Laura Davis is a seasoned journalist and educator at her alma mater, USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Her mission is to address the challenges in newsroom workflows and editing processes. She created ‘Stylebot’, a copy editing plug-in compatible with Slack, Microsoft Teams and Google Chrome, which offers a way to easily adhere to style guides in the digital age.

Students Filling The Gap

In the places where local journalism has suffered, oftentimes college and university news outlets are the ones filling in the gaps. To address the lack of education coverage and, hopefully, prevent more news deserts, 21 high school students in the Sacramento region are in training  to report on education in their schools and districts.

Today’s journalism industry faces a slew of challenges: expanding news deserts, insufficient diversity and inclusion in newsrooms, declining trust in traditional news media, the list goes on. If we have any hope of fortifying our industry in today’s post-truth era, we must work together at every level of the journalism career pipeline. By “we,” I mean students, educators, professional journalists and concerned stakeholders alike, who value our Constitutionally protected free press and want to safeguard it well into the future.
